Demographics

On the demographics screen, participants are requested to share their age, gender, nationality, and whether or not they use a phone case. To input personal information, participants must click on each blue field on the screen and use the picker wheels to select an appropriate value. For age and nationality, participants must select “Done” in the toolbar above the picker wheel once the correct value is chosen. For gender, it is sufficient to simply drag the picker wheel over the gender of choice and release the wheel to select it.

Device Holding Position

The screen displayed above demonstrates how the device must be held for the duration of the experiment. Participants must grasp their handheld device with their left hand as demonstrated above and use their right index finger to interact with the application. Once the device is held in the accordance with instructions, participants can agree to the prompt and tap the button to proceed to the next phase of the experiment.

Training Phase of the Experiment

For this portion of the experiment, participants are requested to tap on each button to feel the vibration produced by their devices. Once the vibration ends, the next vibration can be activated by pressing another button. Each time a new button is tapped, the button will change color after the vibration ends signifying that the associated vibration has been interacted with. Participants are free to interact with each vibration as many times as desired. When all 14 vibrations have been experienced, participants can tap the “NEXT” button to proceed to the next phase.

NOTE: Participants must complete the training phase and experimental phase in under 40 minutes. Upon failure to do so, the session will be invalidated and participants will be required to repeat the training and experimental phases of the application.

Similarity Phase

Once this page has been reached, participants are expected to interact with two vibrations by tapping buttons “A” and “B”. Once the vibrations are felt, the slider must be adjusted to reflect the similarity of the two vibrations. Each time a button is tapped and its associated vibration has ended, the color of the button will change to reflect that the vibration has been interacted with. When both vibrations have been experienced and the slider has been adjusted, the “SUBMIT RATING” button will change color signifying that the participant can proceed to test the next pair of vibrations. Each vibration can be played multiple times.

Participants must evalute the similarity of 92 pairs of vibrations before they can advance to the next phase.

Completion Page

This screen is the last phase of the experiment. Participants are presented with a completion code that they must keep record of to recieve payment for undergoing the experiment. The code must be submitted on Amazon Mechanical Turk.

NOTE: The data collected for each participant is reviewed; if a participant does not follow instructions or fails the attention test, we reserve the right to withhold payment. To avoid failing the attention test, particpants are urged to remove their phone case and evalute the similarity of the vibrations attentively.
